Why I Started This Blog

I ran across Derek Sivers' Tech Independence article when it first came out (before he included the script) and had a lot of fun walking through the steps to get a VPS set up and a personal site.

I set it up and then didn't touch it for a few months.

That same article started me thinking how locked in many of my apps and tech services were.

I also have heard that you should be blogging so you can "learn in public".

You're supposed to write on the internet to "build a brand".

I actually started a blog on Worpress back in (checks notes), 2012.

It was more of a journal that I updated intermittently but that too fell off.

I want to move out of the walled gardens of social media.

I still have Facebook and Instagram accounts but never post on these platforms.

I also came across this article by Henry Desroches and thought what the hell, let's get something set up.

I had heard of the IndieWeb movement and started a Micro.blog at some point but I also came across Bear Blog as well.

I went with Bear Blog because it seems simple.

I wanted to reduce the friction but at the same time make it "mine".

I did install Hugo and nginx originally with the intent to use it with Emacs but that seemed like too much initial friction.

I hope to move to a workflow like that later but for now, I want to stick with this set up and be somewhat consistent.

For now, I am going to post this so I can rip the bandaid off so to speak.
